During the recent uncertain times our families have been more important than ever to all of us as we strive to do everything possible to keep our loved ones healthy, safe and happy. However, what living in the UAE and working at DESS has taught me is that it is possible to have more than one family. For many of us our friends become family too and, as a proud member of the DESS family, I am privileged to see daily examples of children, parents and staff going out of their way to take care of each other.

So, what is the definition of a family? It is much more than a dictionary definition; it is also a feeling that bonds people together. Some of the characteristics of a family may include; support, care, love, providing a sense of security and belonging, open communication, respect and feeling valued.

These characteristics of family connection rely on us all living and working harmoniously with others in a real feeling of togetherness.

“Strength lies in differences not similarities.” Steven Covey

With over 200 nationalities living and working in the UAE, and over 50 nationalities in our DESS family, we have the amazing opportunity to be interacting with, learning from and collaborating with people from a range of cultures, backgrounds and beliefs.

This cultural diversity is something that is celebrated throughout all aspects of our daily life at DESS; it enriches learning.  From informal conversations at snack time to learning through languages, social studies, moral education, the arts and reading, we are preparing our children to go out into the wider world as true global citizens.

Today, as DESS has celebrated its annual International Day the children have been immersed into a true celebration of all of the nationalities and cultures that make our DESS family so special. Despite being different to our usual event, it has been an amazing day of singing, stories, international lunchboxes, talking, creativity and most importantly fun!

Wishing you and your families, near and far, a safe and healthy half term holiday.
